Phonemic skills can be practiced at ANY age!
Middle School Teachers:
π€ Play games or challenges with the whole class. This could be word work (Making Big Words is a great resource), Rhyming competitions, partner work to blend or segment sounds)
π€ Use Pseudo-words that follow real word patterns to make it more interesting and challenging
π€ Let the kids who are good at this be leaders and model the skills for students who struggle!
π€ Big kids like games too... & let's face it. They're going through a LOT in middle school. Sometimes an easy game is a great relief for those kids who can do this - and also strengthens skills for kids who need the practice. Win win!
Elementary Teachers:
π€ Play games based on a specific phonemic skill every day for 5-10 minutes with the whole class. (Making words, tapping out sounds, rhyming, alliteration games)
π€ Play a repeat after me game while practicing different skills (blending phonemes, manipulating, segmenting)
π€ Let students who are good at these skills help the others!
π€ Model these skills during read aloud time and talk intentionally about syllables, rhymes, sounds in words!
